Where Were You?

Job 38:4-7 Where were you when I laid the foundation of the earth? Tell me, if you have understanding.  Who determined its measurements- surely you know!   Or who stretched the line upon it?  On what were its bases sunk, or who laid its cornerstone, when the morning stars sang together and all the sons of God shouted with joy?

Joy, joy, joy!  When it hit me that tonight the Lord wanted me to write on Job 38, I could hardly wait to find these keys beneath my fingertips.  This, my friends, is one of my most favorite chapters in the Bible.  This entire chapter is life changing and refreshing and uplifting and if understood, about as freeing as a chapter could be.  Why?  Because it is a bold, blatant, and even sarcastic call to humility by our Father in heaven.

Whenever life feels overwhelming, this chapter will bring us back to center.  Where were we- indeed.   Where ARE we?   We are happily put in our place by the Creator of the Universe in this chapter, ever reminded that He is God and we are not-  thankfully!  Oh how thankful I am that God is God and I am not.

His infinite wisdom, understanding and ability to work life out for our good is the greatest comfort one could ever have, ever know.  Do yourself a favor and go read it all right here:   http://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=job%2038&version=ESV

Yes, life can be overwhelming for US.  But life is never, ever overwhelming for our Father which art in heaven.  And as long as He has us in the palm of His hand, we are safe.  It’s all about putting ourselves right there, smack dab in the palm of His hand, releasing ourselves and our lives to Him.  It doesn’t matter how out of control it feels out there.  If we surrender our control to Him, He’s got this!  Always and forever! But it really does mean surrender.  Complete surrender.

Where were we when He shut in the sea with doors, when he made the clouds His garment?   Have we ever commanded the morning or caused the dawn to know its place?    Have we every entered into the springs of the sea or walked in the recesses of the deep?   Have we comprehended the expanse of the earth?   Is it us that has provided the raven its prey?

Nope, nope it’s not.   It’s not us at all.   Oh my God, He is God!  He is everything and He knows everything and He can handle everything and work it all for our good.  Shout it from the rooftops!  Praise Him!  We are NOT God! Whew, that was close!   🙂

Takeaway:   God is God and we are not.  He created all that was, all that is, and all that is to come.  He’s got this!  He’s greater than anything we could possibly ever think to be.  He is not overwhelmed, He is not confused.   Humility means freedom.   We are not limited to our own (lack of) power.   We have the Creator of the Universe and all things on our side!  Hallelujah!   Thank you, Jesus!

Prayer:  Father, I pray for humility- to see that You are God and I am not.  I surrender my life and my will and my ways to You.  I desire to obey You and You alone- not my emotions, not my circumstances, not life based on my own understanding.  You are vast and I am slight.   Hold me in the palm of Your hand and protect me from myself.  I am yours.   Let me ever praise Your name that others might know You.  And bring me back to Job 38 whenever I need a solid reminder of who You are and who I am not.   I love you, Lord.  I surrender to do Your will and not my own.
